On Wednesday evening we had our home season kick-off, which was also our debut in the Hungarian Cup. Our opponent was a completely renewed Lehel HC in the Győri Jégsport Központ, it was going to be an exciting game.

In the first half of the meeting, we failed to play our technical, long-passing game, and although we had chances, we could not take advantage of them. In the 11. minute Szabó received a permanent ban and in the same situation Benedek was also fouled, so we had a double man advantage for 2 minutes, and then another 3 minutes of 5 on 4, but we couldn’t take advantage of this great opportunity (in fact, the visitors could bring the puck one on one on several occasions), and at this level, there are consequences. This was not missed, on the 17th. In the second minute, Karda, who was brought up in Győr, found the familiar goal, and Jászberény could go into the break with the lead.

The first half of the second period was still about finding our game, we had 4 penalties in a row, but like last season, we couldn’t complain about our man-down defense. In the 33. minute Lehel were still able to convert the oppurtinity, Fedorin scored. In the second half of the third we were able to pick up our own style, and the large crowd saw some really nice hockey. Less than 1 minute before the break Makovic bombed in from an impossible angle and the puck bounced in the right direction, but no more goals were scored, so once again the visitors went to rest with a 1 goal lead.

We started the last part of the game with great energy, and it paid off, Norbert Lévai could equalize in the 43rd minute. minute. Unfortunately, we could not rejoice for long, a few minutes later a well-played counterattack gave the visitors the lead again through Borbát. With 2 minutes to go we called timeout and tried an empty-netter, but we lost the puck and Popov put the puck into the net without Kornakker. In the remaining time we tried this formation once more, but luckily for us the visitors couldn’t hit the goal and the final score was 2:4.

We had hoped for a better debut at home, but Lehel HC, with 6 legionnaires, showed a completely new face, which already foreshadows an exciting and competitive 2023/24 season in the expanded Andersen League.

Next Tuesday we have a rematch in Jászberény, we need to win by 3 goals (or 2 if we score more than 4) to qualify. It will not be an easy task, but not impossible!

On Saturday (10.07. – 18:30) we will meet the guys again at home, in the Andersen League against the Sportországi Cápák.
