Wednesday night was the debut of our team in front of a home crowd in the EUHL, an international university league where we have only played away. Our first win was still to come, so we were determined and hungry for success against HC UNIZA from Zilina.

The first period was very evenly matched, and the number of shots on goal was even at the end of the period (7-7). Both teams defended effectively, but there were also dangerous situations on both sides. Fortunately, a goal from Győr was able to “break the ice”, after a struggling puck, Jábor Bendegúz scored in the middle of the period. A few minutes later, Benedek Madácsi received a great puck 10 meters from the goal, which he could bomb into the visitors’ net. The boys went into the break with a 2 goal lead.

We came out more confident in the second period, and you could feel that UNI GYŐR ETO HC was going to dominate the game. The first goal was still almost 10 minutes away, as Bence Makovics was able to score from a well-worked counter attack. The last 3 minutes of the period brought a real goal-scorer, first Madácsi hit a rebounded puck, then a minute and a half before the break the visitors scored their goal, Kosut scored after a defensive mistake. It wasn’t over yet, 1 minute after the midway break Jábor scored his second goal, so we went into the last break with a 4 goal lead.

In the third period, the home crowd didn’t have to wait until half time for some nice goals, a minute and a half after the start Norbert Lévai got a nice start, which he could execute in a great way. 2 minutes later, we managed to start well from a man down, and Dominik Sipák scored the 7th Győr goal, setting the final score.

After the previous day’s Hungarian Cup match – which didn’t end too well for us – it was good to see that the boys were able to face an unknown opponent with renewed energy and confidence and get their first win in front of their home crowd in the international university league.

On Saturday the boys will play against Dél-Budai HC in the Andersen League, and on Monday Gladiators Trencin will come to Győr Jégsport Központ for an EUHL match!
