Tuesday night was the second leg of the first round of the Hungarian Cup, our team travelled to Jászberény, where Lehel HC was waiting for us. In our home game we won 6:3, so we took a 3-point lead, but we knew that even so, it would not be a walk in the park.
The first half of the first period was scoreless, but you could feel that the home team was doing their best to reduce our lead. In the 12th minute, they were able to come closer, Prilutskii received a nice pass, after which he had a clear shot at Róth’s goal and made no mistake (1-0). 2 minutes before the whistle, on a 4/4 set-up, Csata Sebestyén drove with the puck and passed it to a clear positioned Nagy Márk, who shot with surgical precision into the bottom left corner (1-1).
In the second period we managed to pick up the pace and the game changed, we created a series of dangerous situations, but we couldn’t score. We had to wait until the end of the 36th minute: we led a brisk counterattack in a man down through our previous goal scorer, Márk Nagy, who passed beautifully to Benedek Madácsi in the middle, the home goalkeeper had no chance (1-2). No more goals were scored in the period, so the boys went into the break with a 4-point lead.
Most of the third period was uneventful, the real excitement was left for the last minutes: in the 57th Pinczés was able to take advantage of the waning attention of our defence and scored the equalizer (2-2). A few seconds later István Szűcs was given an opinion penalty, after which Szilárd Rusznyák, the home team’s head coach, called for a timeout. Although they should have overcome a 3-goal deficit in 3 minutes, it was clear that the Jászberény team would do everything to achieve a miracle. With their goalkeeper down, they could attack in a 6/4 formation and managed to turn the lead into a goal, another legionnaire, Popov, scored (3-2). As Botond Fekete had also “collected” a 2-minute suspension in the meantime, we also called for a time-out. We defended the last 2 minutes of the game with a man down, but this time the home team could not find a gap in the shield.
Although the match was won by Jászberény, we won the match 8:6 on aggregate, so we qualified for the second round of the Hungarian Cup.
The next games in the cup are on 12 and 26 November, with our opponents to be drawn at a later date.
