Tuesday evening was the first match of the third round of the Hungarian Cup, our team was the guest of UTE in the Erste League. We had to face one of the strongest opponents of this season in Újpest Ice Hall. From the first minute the home team had the upper hand, the puck was mostly in our own zone, and we managed to defend two man down situations, but despite that the Budapest team went into the break with a 2 goal lead, thanks to Szalma and Stevenson. (2-0) At the beginning of the second period we managed to surprise our opponent, in less than 3 minutes we tied the score, first Bence Dézsi and then Benedek Madácsi scored. As expected, after that UTE “shook themselves” and secured the first game of the match with 5 goals in a row, then after a Győr timeout, Bence Makovics scored a beauty before the break (8-3) The last period started with a Győr goal, Csata Sebi hit a puck, then came the “retaliation”, this time in a 3-goal game. In the last minutes no more goals were scored, so the final score was 10:4.
Head coach Mátyás Odnoga summed up the meeting:
I’m quite satisfied with the four goals scored, but not with the ten. We are not used to this tempo and we made mistakes that the opponent at this level exploits mercilessly. I’m sorry that we had some short-cuts for several minutes, but I still think that we didn’t break the hockey with a pick, we tried to play back and forth, and even succeeded in some cases, I’m proud of my team!
The second match of the match will take place on 18 December in Győr.
