2 days after 2 wins (against Zsolna and Kassa), the EUHL regular season is coming to its final part and now the biggest challenge: we hosted the table-topping, last year’s champion UMB from Banská Bystrica on Saturday night at the Győr Jégsport Központ.
On paper, it was expected to be a straight away win, but luckily the boys are not familiar with the concept of paper and took to the ice with confidence and a win in mind. It was a completely even game in the first period, with dangerous moves on both sides, but the defence held firm and the first 20 minutes ended without a goal.
In the second period, the teams also came out on the ice with great energy, and by a hair, but we seemed to be putting more pressure on the opponent. Despite this, the first goal of the meeting came from Banská Bystrica’s stick, after an opinionated collision the visitors were able to start from their own third and Porubsky scored 3 minutes before the break. 0-1
Even though we were one line shorter than our opponent, we didn’t give up and fought hard in the last third, although the Slovak team was able to create more chances. But luckily they only managed to get some chances, and in the 53rd minute Benedek Madácsi got a beautiful start and ruthlessly put the puck into the net to get the equalizer! 1-1
It looked like it was going to be extra time, but with a minute and a half to go we had a man advantage and head coach Mátyás Odnoga called a timeout. It seemed clear that the goal was to win the game in normal time, after the party we immediately attacked the visitors, but it paid off, Jasenek was able to get the puck and headed it into the Győr goal, which he didn’t miss, deciding the game in the last minute 1-2.
Great game from the boys, we almost managed to surprise last year’s champions in the third game in 3 days.
We finished the regular season with a big heart and as a real team, we will have to play against Zsolna in the EUHL playoffs for the top 4 in a 3 games to 3 match playoff.
