Our team starts its second season with Mátyás Odnoga at the helm. Last season brought great results, so before the start of October we asked our head coach about the challenges ahead: The 24/25 season is about to get underway, but first let’s take a look back at the previous season, which was full of excitement and results.
How would you assess last year’s performance?

O.M. – I would definitely like to start by saying that last year we successfully took a big step towards our goal!
At the beginning of the season, the outcome of last season was not completely clear, but I feel that after 2-3 months we found the perfect balance and everyone knew their job!
Winning the title was a great achievement for all the players and staff and I feel it was well deserved, I am proud of everyone we worked with to achieve it !

Now let’s move on to the tasks ahead: this year the team will compete in several divisions (Andersen League, EUHL, Hungarian Cup, MEFOB).
What are your goals/ideas for the competition?
O.M. – We will continue to work towards a multi-year plan that we have dreamed up with the help of the Széchenyi University, and this season will also be important in this, and we are starting it with the Andersen Cup in Győr.
We have gained a lot of experience in the EUHL and based on that we have a definite goal this year to make the playoffs and get as close as possible to the final!
The Hungarian Cup is always a good competition, and a good feedback where we are compared to the Erste League teams, let’s hope they will even take notice of our 1-1 junior talent!
The goal is to win the MEFOB championship!

Last year the team showed a very united face, will there be any significant changes in the roster this year?
Who is leaving and who is coming in?
How will this affect unity?
O.M. – Indeed, one of our strengths is the cohesion between the players and this year there has been very little change, we have two new, experienced players: Bence Dézsi and István Szűcs.
Both come from abroad, but with several years of Erste Liga experience. We have temporarily lost our goalkeeper Ákos Mészáros, who chose a university course that is not available at the University of Győr.
He will continue his career in Budapest, we wish him good luck!
I’m happy to say that more than 10 of our players are students of Széchenyi University, we are making very good progress in the development of the career model we have been dreaming of for 2 years.
Team unity is always one of the most important and we are building our squad on this basis, with players that young athletes can learn from and look up to !

How would you describe the strengths of the team, either from a technical or human point of view? O.M. – We are a fast, combinative team, and thanks to our unity we will be able to innovate or surprise in any situation, the guys love a challenge, we are ready for any obstacle!

Finally, what would you like to say to our fans, who have repeatedly created an unforgettable atmosphere on the pitch? O.M. – First of all, I would like to thank you for your support, it was fantastic to see the hall full last year !
I can promise you that there will be no fake fall and no foreigners in Győr jerseys!
Every game, 22 men will put their hearts on the ice and fight to the last minute! Go UNI GYŐR ETO!
