We’ve progressed in the Hungarian Cup without conceding a single goal!

Just two days after our 9–0 league opener in Zalaegerszeg, a cup tie was already waiting for us: in the first round of the Hungarian Cup qualifiers, we were away to BJA U21 at the Tüskecsarnok in Budapest. This year a single match decided who would progress – and against an opponent our senior team had never faced before. Last season DVTK Jegesmedvék of the Erste Liga knocked us out of the competition in the second round.

In the first period the home side had more shots on goal (10–4), but Martin Szeles stopped every one of them. In the 11th minute we killed off Miklós Wenner’s penalty without trouble, and four minutes later a minor to Buzás gave us a power play, although we were unable to convert it. We finally took the lead at even strength in the 17th minute: Benedek Madácsi found the net from passes by Benedek Horváth and István Szűcs (0–1).

In the second period we had more shots on goal (19–11). In the 26th minute Tornyos was penalised, and one minute into the power play Benedek Horváth – this time set up by István Szűcs and Ádám Balogh – doubled our lead (0–2). Two further penalties to Kovács gave us two more power plays in the rest of the period, but no further goals came, so we went into the second intermission with a two-goal lead.

Early in the final period we had to kill off a bench minor, which we did, and 25 seconds after it expired, in the 46th minute, István Süveg made it three from passes by Sebestyén Csata and István Szűcs (0–3) – already the third assist of the night for Szűcs. In the 53rd minute Áron Láday received a five-minute penalty and was ejected for the rest of the game, which meant five minutes shorthanded. Not only did we kill it off: in the 57th minute Benedek Madácsi scored his second goal shorthanded, set up by Bence Makovics and Botond Fekete (0–4).

The closing stages were no easier: Benedek Horváth in the 57th minute and Botond Fekete in the 59th were also penalised, so apart from four seconds we played the last seven-plus minutes of the game shorthanded, including just over half a minute two men down. Even so, the home side could not score: Martin Szeles finished the game with 30 saves and a shutout, while at the other end Daradics made 26 saves.

Two competitive matches, 13 goals scored, none conceded: we are through in the Hungarian Cup with a shutout win. Shots on goal finished 30–30, but while we scored four times, Martin Szeles stopped all 30. We will be back soon with news of the next round of the Cup. In the meantime, our first home league game is on Saturday 3 October at 6:00 pm at the Győr University Ice Sports Center, against the Kárpáti Farkasok.
