We won the Halloween top-of-the-table clash in the final minute!

On Saturday evening we hosted DUE WORM Angels for our Halloween game at the Győr University Ice Sports Center. It was a top-of-the-table clash in the Andersen League’s Western Group: second against third, with both teams on 9 points going into the game. Over the past three seasons we have won all ten of our league meetings with them, and eleven days earlier we had beaten them 2–1 in overtime in the Hungarian Cup. Martin Szeles started in goal again, and 280 spectators, some of them in costume, cheered us on from the stands.

We got off to a flying start: in the 4th minute Ádám Balogh put us ahead from passes by István Szűcs and Sebestyén Csata (1–0), and in the 9th minute Botond Horváth doubled our lead (2–0). Towards the end of the period penalties followed one after another on both sides, and in the 19th minute Farkas pulled one back on the power play (2–1). We outshot the visitors 22–13 in the first period.

The game turned at the start of the second period: in the 22nd minute Farkas equalised on the power play (2–2), and just over a minute later Magosi put the visitors ahead (2–3). We responded quickly: in the 25th minute Miklós Wenner equalised from passes by Benedek Madácsi and Keve Bendegúz Sárkány (3–3). Shortly afterwards, penalties to Bence Dézsi and Pinczés gave us a two-man advantage for just over a minute; we did not score then, but in the 30th minute Botond Horváth got his second goal from a Szabolcs Beck pass, and we were back in front (4–3). In the 35th minute, while István Süveg was serving a penalty, Szekeres equalised (4–4), so we went into the second intermission level.

Early in the final period we killed off a penalty to Bence Makovics, and in the 45th minute, after a bench penalty against the visitors, Sebestyén Csata restored our lead on the power play, assisted by István Szűcs and Bence Makovics (5–4). In the 50th minute, penalties to Keve Bendegúz Sárkány and Bence Makovics left us two men down, and the visitors took advantage: Barnabás Dézsi equalised (5–5). We killed off the rest of the penalty. Late on, penalties to Magosi and Bence Dézsi gave us two more power plays, and we made the second one count: 34 seconds before the final whistle, István Szűcs beat Sági from a Miklós Wenner pass (6–5). We won the shot count 17–7 in the third period.

We won an eleven-goal, back-and-forth top-of-the-table clash: the visitors equalised three times, but the team always fought back and secured the three points in the final minute. We outshot them 55–35 overall; Martin Szeles made 30 saves, and Sági stopped 49 shots at the other end. The win takes us to 12 points and puts us alone in second place in the Western Group. Thank you to the 280 supporters – and everyone in costume – for cheering us on! Next Saturday, 7 November, at 4.15 pm we are away to HKB at the Tüskesátor.
