The last matches of the UNIVERSITY OF GYŐR HOCKEY CUP III were played on Saturday. In the morning the team of Uniza from Zsolna faced the Sabers from Auschwitz. The Poles came with a very strong squad and showed good form throughout, winning their last match and thus winning the tournament with a perfect record.
The last match of the cup was in the afternoon, where our team played against Philosophers from Opatija. Traditionally we play “pepper” matches with the Slovakian team, and this time was no different.
It was only in the seventh minute of the first period when we found ourselves in a difficult situation, the guests had a double man advantage, which they managed to take advantage of through Kudrna.0-1 Before the end of the period we had the same opportunity, but we failed to take advantage of it, the boys went into the first break with a one goal advantage.
In the second period, the game-changing turn came in the seventh minute, after a minor scuffle, the referees decided to send Bencé Makovics from Győrie and Simon Homolafrom nyitra to the dressing room with a permanent sending off. Together with the extra penalty, we went into a man disadvantage, which was again well exploited by the visitors, Bendak was left free. 0-2
A minute and a half before the whistle, however, the home crowd could rejoice, as Mátyás Odnoga scored a beautiful goal from an almost impossible angle. 1-2
Unfortunately, the remaining 90 seconds did not pass without incident, 2 seconds before the break István Szűcs was sent off for unsportsmanlike conduct.
We faced a difficult last third, we had to play without two key players (Bence Makovics, István Szűcs) and we started the last 20 minutes with a man disadvantage. And the “Philosophers” took advantage of this, barely 30 seconds after the puck was thrown in, the guests scored their third goal. 1-3
As during the whole game, we could score more goals than our opponent, but we could only convert our superiority into a goal in the last minutes . 2-3
We did our best in the final period to force overtime, but the visitors defended with discipline and took home the 3 points.
The two final penalties sealed the match, and it was decided that Nyitra took home the 2nd place trophy, while we finished in 3rd place.
We have 4 games left in the EUHL regular season and we have a great chance to make the playoffs.
